Breakthrough of Greater Philadelphia is associated with Breakthrough Collaborative, a network of 24 affiliates worldwide. Since its founding in 1978, Breakthrough Collaborative has changed the trajectories of more than 10,000 underserved students and inspired 4,000 young people to pursue a career in education.
Founded in 1845, Germantown Friends School is a Preschool through Grade 12 independent school based in the Germantown section of Philadelphia. GFS' mission is to seek truth, challenge the intellect, honor differences, embrace the city, and nurture each student’s mind, body and spirit.
Since 1995, GFS has helped power Breakthrough's program with its passion for intellectual exploration, curriculum enhancements, experienced faculty to coach our Teaching Fellows, facilities to house our offices and program, and operations support. Breakthrough of Greater Philadelphia remains an independent 501(c)(3) and realizes many business and operational efficiencies due to our partnership with GFS, ultimately ensuring that any revenue raised will work directly towards Breakthrough's mission of building educational equity and diversity.
