Dear Breakthrough Families,
We are outraged and saddened about the murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and countless others along with the systemic injustices against black people. Black Lives Matter!!!
We see the heartbreak, anger, and despair across the country and stand in solidarity as agents of change. We are committed to making sure that we fulfill our mission to our students.
Black Life Matters at Breakthrough, and now more than ever, we will continue to work toward educational equity for all students and provide the academic enrichment they deserve.
Breakthrough of Greater Philadelphia increases educational opportunity by developing students and future teachers. Through academic enrichment and college preparation, Breakthrough prepares middle school students to attend and succeed at competitive high schools and four-year colleges. Simultaneously, Breakthrough develops future educators by providing professional teaching experiences to college students.
We believe that quality education is activism at its core. At a time when many institutions have cancelled learning, Breakthrough is fully committed to making a fun and academic focused program for the summer. Our rising 7th, 8th and 9th grade students will avert the summer slide and prepare for high school and, ultimately, college.
First Lady Michelle Obama said “The ability to read, write, and analyze; the confidence to stand up and demand justice and equality; the qualifications and connections to get your foot in that door and take your seat at that table – all of that starts with education…”
Education requires constant action on behalf of our students. At Breakthrough, we live by these words and we believe that, through our students and teaching fellows, we will make real change and impact the world in positive ways that are desperately needed.
