Breakthrough of Greater Philadelphia launches in-person program at Germantown Friends School for the first time since March 2020
On Saturday, September 26th, Breakthrough of Greater Philadelphia launched an in-person program at Germantown Friends School (GFS) for the first time since March 2020. We are excited to have the opportunity to host students who feel comfortable with in-person instruction every Saturday from 9:45 to 2:00pm on GFS’ campus. Breakthrough’s site at Drexel University is closed to in-person learning due to Covid -19.
Breakthrough will help to ensure student and teacher safety by having 7th and 8th graders attend classes on alternate weekends to ensure social distancing.
This fall, GFS implemented a hybrid in person/remote learning program for its students, clearing the way for Breakthrough to operate in a similar model this school year. Every Saturday, our students in either 7th or 8th grade will come to campus and participate in a rigorous academic program. Many of these same students participated in Breakthrough’s first-ever virtual summer program, where, despite economic, social and health challenges, 85% of students demonstrated skills growth. At summer’s end, many students expressed dismay at not being able to see their friends in person. Breakthrough has always been a place where students and Teaching Fellows formed lifelong friendships.
Our hope with this fall’s in-person program is that students will both learn challenging concepts, and experience a return to normalcy following a week of remote instruction at District schools. This fall, the students will have classes in Public Speaking, Financial Literacy using the EverFi program, Writing, and Literature. We will have guest speakers such as Travis Rhoads, Regional President, Truist Financial – Delaware Valley/Lehigh Valley Region (previously BB&T). We are excited about the fall and believe that our students will truly benefit from this in person classroom experience.
