Today, Tana is a first generation college graduate. When she came to Breakthrough as a Harding Jr. High student, she was a girl looking for an opportunity. Tana’s mother says, “education was a fundamental value to both of us, so we saw Breakthrough as a special chance.”
Beyond Breakthrough’s nuts and bolts, Tana feels the most important lesson she learned was belief in her self. Breakthrough “taught us that we were capable of doing things that seemed out of our reach and capabilities." Nothing has stopped her since.
Tana entered Bodine High in 1999 where she was Vice President of the World Affairs Council Club and co-editor of the newspaper. She graduated from West Chester University in 2007 as a literature major and University ambassador, and will soon begin her masters in library science.
Tana is committed to giving back; she teaches at Lutheran Settlement House and volunteered in college as an ESL writing tutor. In the future, she hopes to become a research librarian with a focus on literacy.
