At Breakthrough of Greater Philadelphia, summer is always just around the corner. Beginning in September, Breakthrough prepares for another summer of rigorous academics sprinkled with a healthy dose of fun. We immediately start recruiting the next class of hardworking sixth graders, and in October, the application process to select the best college students from across the country to teach and inspire those students begins.
In order to ensure that housing is not a barrier for our out-of-town college students teaching at our sites at Germantown Friends School and Drexel University, we are always seeking gracious homestay volunteers to open their homes for nine weeks the nine week program.
In 2018, we are seeking housing for teachers for the nine week period from June 10 to August 11.
Homestay families are asked to provide a bedroom and, if possible, meals to our Teaching Fellows. In past years, teaching fellows have proven themselves as respectful and mature house guests. It is not a requirement that families be present during the homestay period, so this can be an excellent opportunity for families who may be traveling for portions of the summer and are seeking a temporary house-sitter. (Unfortunately, our teaching fellows are on site from early morning through mid-evening and are not available for daytime pet care responsibilities.)
Teaching Fellows are scheduled to arrive in Philadelphia during the weekend of June 9-10. Their intensive two-week teacher training will begin on June 9th. At the end of their training, teaching fellows will disperse to their respective sites to begin an exhilarating six-week teaching internship. All teachers participate in a one-week wrap-up of reflection and evaluation that will end the weekend of August 11-12.
If you are interested in participating in the homestay program, please complete this survey. You may complete this survey to express interest at any time, but if you intend to participate in the 2018 summer program, it is most helpful if you complete it by Wednesday, February 28. That will allow us to use this information when making important student teacher hiring decisions.
After you complete the survey, a member of our staff will then work with you to help identify the best fit for your family, taking into account pets/allergies, food preferences and any other special circumstances identified by you and the student teacher.
