On Saturday, April 28th, Health Partners Plan brought spoken word artist and educator, Rienne Scott, to Breakthrough for a film screening and performance that was powerful and inspiring for everyone in the room. The opening of the event featured a students watched a short film showing two young men reciting these insightful pieces from the perspective of a young, black man who grew up in Philadelphia and another who spent time with the military in Iraq. As these lyrical works provided perspective into two communities oceans apart and yet somehow so similar, Breakthrough students had a time to reflect and write about their experiences growing up in Philadelphia. With the prompt focused on the students writing a letter to their city, Rienne really pushed the students to think about how to harness their experiences for creative expression. Below you can find photos and videos of our students reading their writing from the day.
Big thanks to Health Partners Plan for planning this event with Breakthrough!
